  • Wash your hair before you wash your face, because if you wash your hair after, the shampoo and conditioner can get on your skin and clog pores therefore cause acne
  • Splurge a little bit and buy yourself a face cleanser brush. I have the mia 2 but they go on sale regularly at macys so you can get them for a decent price. Don’t use rotating brushes like the proactive or ulta brand one, because it’ll irritate your skin, especially if it’s sensitive. The Mia “pulsates” to clean your skin and it’s a lot less abrasive. Replacement heads are like $20 bucks but you can find them for like 2 for $5 on e-bay and they work perfectly fine. I have the acne brush head & sensitive brush head – and they’ve started to fade my scars! 
  • Stay away from salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. These products made my acne worse over time and made my skin red and irritated (sensitive skin) 
  • Try out tea tree oil from the body shop to reduce pimple size & redness. I recommend this to everyone who is struggling with acne, and so far it’s helped everyone. For me, the oil brought the pimple head to the top of my skin so I could pop it and then I put the oil on it after I cleaned it and it’d be completely gone in about 2 days. If you’re going to use anything other than TBS, make sure it’s diluted. Undiluted tea tree oil is harmful and irritating to the skin!
  • The Body Shop has a whole kit for tea tree products and so far it’s the only face wash that HASN’T broken out my skin – even better than my perscription 
  • Wash your makeup off with Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo (the original kind, don’t use anything fragrant, that’ll break you out more). This is a recommendation from my doctor. It’s cleansing and helps your skin more than makeup wipes or makeup remover, and it’s a lot cheaper. Especially if you have sensitive skin. Wash your makeup off first, then wash your face again with your actual face wash. 
  • Once you get out of the shower, put your hair up in a ponytail/headband so your hair doesn’t touch your face. I break out on one side of my face at the same spot and I found out it’s because I was sleeping on my hair. 
  • Wash your pillow cases about once every week or every two weeks, depending on how acne prone your skin is. This helped my skin dramatically. Similarly, you can put a fresh towel over your pillowcase if for some reason you’re not able to wash them. 
  • Buy an aloe vera plant. The mush (i know, very scientific) inside the leaves helps reduce redness and clears acne. 
  • Take vitamins high in Omega-3 or Hair, Skin, and Nails vitamins. 
  • Don’t wear makeup when you don’t need to. This will help with your confidence overall. Start off small and work your way up so you’re not uncomfortable. Start off with not putting makeup on if you’re staying home, then move onto going to the store without it, going to school (especially college– NO one cares in college), etc. 
  • MAKE SURE TO WASH IT OFF EVERY NIGHT. Even if you’re dead tired. Trust me. One night for me means a week of pimples if I don’t wash it off. Your skin will thank you.
  • Don’t switch makeup foundations often. Find out if your skin is dry or oily, and then go from there. I recommend using bareMinerals. Be sure to always apply moisturizer before applying makeup. 
  • Most of all: Don’t stress out about it. I have extremely fair skin and to me, my acne scars are extremely noticeable. But I’ve realized no one cares. No one notices as much as you do. Everyone has acne and it’s such a common thing, so people tend to overlook your bumps and scars. Learn to love your skin, even your scars. I know that’s so cliche but it’s so important. The more you love your skin, the less you stress out. Pimples happen to everyone. It’ll be okay. It’ll heal. And so will the scars.
